Thai Worship Camp visit

Tertiary WAM have the privilege and opportunity to join the Thai worship camp in Bangkok last December. It was really a wonderful trip for all of us. During the trip, we have the privilege to be hosted by the leaders of Thai worship team like Chin Chin, Michael and also Simon.

During the trip, we learned a lot about character and loving God as a musician from the leaders, members and the team. Coming together in a place together with 250 people who love God with their life and talents is just amazing. Ps Prayuth took the opportunity to share his vision with us and his burden about worship team. His sharing moved us deeply and cast a huge burden and vision in all of us.

As a band leader, I had my objective for being there. I longed for my members to hear from God and to have a breakthrough. Indeed God did it. Pastor Prayuth shared what is the biblical view of worship team musicians and playing in a outside band. He called for higher commitment for those who serve as stage ministers. Immediately this sharing challenged 2 of my team members - because their own bands are doing very well in the Singapore band arena (their songs are featured in Heeren and they were actually on the way to have their own album made). But in the end, by God's grace, they responded to the challenge to give up their own band and commit fully to the vision of the worship team.

God truly is with our Singapore worship team, Pastor Prayuth challenged the worship team in Singapore to take the calling of a true worship team and do what they (Thai team) are doing now.

Finally, just want to thank God for giving us the opportunity to even stay close to this bunch of anointed people. We truly miss them!!!

Worship evangelism...my journey

During my preparation for leading worship on 30 Nov (message was on Martha’s response to Lazarus’ death in the book of John), I sensed God wanted to do something special in the lives of the people. It was going to be something birthed out of faith. The words God gave me were “God saves.” I came across a song, Hosanna, by Paul Baloche in his Album “A Greater Song.” I looked up the internet for the meaning of hosanna as I had forgotten. It is the Hebrew word used an exclamation meaning “save, we pray.” With that I started to choose my songs around this theme. The final selection of songs were Hosanna, Overtaken (CFNI), and The Time Has Come (Hillsong) for praise and With All I Am (Hillsong), Here I Am To Worship (Tim Hughes), Call (Hillsong).

As I gathered the team for our first practice, I asked the team whether they knew the meaning of “hosanna.” Most made a guess. Finally, someone came up with the right answer. I invited someone to share their salvation story. After which I through it open to the floor for someone to share a life story of how God had saved them. The stage sound team member then shared how his experience of God saving him a new believer while he was driving on the road after a late night out on the town. It was wonderful to hear real stories of how we had experienced God’s saving power firsthand. I led the people to pray over the seats in Nexus for God’s saving power to touch both pre believers and believers; after which we practiced the songs.

During the first service, I asked the congregation whether they knew the meaning of hosanna, before leading them to repeatedly declare it as an intro to our first praise song. Things went fairly smoothly. After free worship, I shared the gospel message but stopped short of inviting people to respond as I felt the atmosphere of faith was not really there. During second service, things went fairly smoothly again, though we did forget some lyrics here and there. However, I sensed the timing was right to invite the people to respond after sharing the gospel message. After 15 seconds or so, a hand went up in the back of the auditorium. To see that hand going up brought a mixed feeling, joy and at the same time being humbled that God had answered our prayers.

I later spoke with the person beside him and this person had been attending church for some time but never had been responsive when it came to making a first time decision for Christ. That day, was his day of salvation. Hallelujah!

I want to encourage you as well as our other lead worshippers two things:

1) The power of God comes when we align our theme with the Word of God

2) Praying together not only for ourselves but for God’s people to meet Him is so crucial to see God work in worship.

Praise and worship in Brazil

October brought a fresh experience of worship. Pat and I had the opportunity to visit and minister in three churches in three days in Brazil. We did not understand all of what was being sung, but it was easy to see how they worship the Lord with all their heart.

The young people love to dance and use this as part of their outreach in pioneering churches in neighbouring towns.

Reflections of Anniversary and JUMP concert

This year’s 16th Anniversary marks another pinnacle moment in our church history. Held at Downtown East at D’Marquee, I had the privilege to accompany the Thai worship band when they touched down at Changi Airport 2 days before the anniversary. The camaraderie I experienced when with them was something I wouldn’t trade anything for. To put it simply, they were a bunch of people who loves God deeply and at the same time love people a lot. With them serving alongside us for the anniversary and JUMP concert, I was looking forward to a great time of experiencing the presence of God.

True enough, on 15th September; we had one of the best anniversary celebrations at D’Marquee. The presence of God was moving strongly throughout the two services. I was reminded of the verse in Revelation 7:9 saying, “After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb.” It was surreal to say! I met God immediately when the first song was sung. Everyone was working very hard for this project, especially the crews who were backstage and at the front-of-house, kudos to them who put in their 101% for Jesus ^^....indeed when Moses brought the ten commandments down from the mountain top, he commanded people to come to him, and the Levites were only tribe to go! Pastor PN’s preaching was as impactful as always, sharing on the topic about faith from Romans 4:16-18. The mime item was something original and the remix of “Psalms 78” was equally on par with the tango dance. Not forgetting Pastor Ben & Dinah’s debut dance onstage.

If anniversary wasn’t enough to savour your appetite for God’s presence, there came the JUMP concert on Monday night at TOUCH Community Centre. Two thumbs up for the Thai band in leading us to worship Him after our own Singapore band ministered before the Lord. Spontaneous praise was evoked in the mist when Pastor Prayuth came on to lead the congregation to celebrate unto God; we were all witnessing beforehand what worship is to come when we get to the heaven. Tony, the Thai worship leader even taught us some slick moves that went hand-in-hand with the praise songs. I was deeply encouraged and at the same time feeling a revival sweeping our church to love our God with our heart, mind, soul and strength.

Thank YOU!!!

We thank God for a wonderful 16th Anniversary. Indeed a memorable time where members of different age groups came forward to present an item for this celebration. We had refreshing ideas such as Kids hosting and performing, a short mime from Filipino, remix of Ps 78 and praise dance by the Students, participants of Snapshots of Hope, tango dance from the Adults & Family and Ps Ben & Dinah looking absolutely wonderful that night. This occasion was also graced by the presence of our President Ps PN and Hope Bangkok’s music team. We want to thank all who made this possible. The worship team, choir, ushers, media, sound, lights, security, balloons & bubbles kids volunteers and of course not forgetting the planning committee. It was indeed a heart warming moment and a celebration to be remembered.

WAM Night - Praise and Worship Night.

Last WAM night was really a blast for many of us. People were excited and came importantly with an expectation to be ministered by our Lord.

It’s our very first time holding an extended praise and worship session using two different teams, as well as having our Programming staff team partner with our Intercessors team.

The atmosphere was indeed powerful; with about 400 people coming together from across our nine services. The room is filled with excitement and pure adoration unto the Lord. The first team was led by Daniel, our Youth WAM (Worship, Arts and Media) coach. The second team was led by Jaclyn, from our Family group. Both teams did a great job in ministering to the congregation. Indeed these 2 teams inspired us with their love and worship unto the Lord. Many came down in response for prayer.

Below is one of our many testimonies that came from one of our intercessors

“That night, the Lord sent me 6 students and I exercised Holy Spirit led discernment & word of knowledge; without asking any one what’s their problem/issue. The Holy Spirit gave me just one word for each individuals such as... troubled/ worried/ sadness/ anxiety/ down, need encouragement/ much disturbed. When I asked them: “Am I right in my discerning word?” They all agreed! I went home happy & blessed that God used me, praise God!

One of them teared. Another came to me after the event ended to share what he's facing, how God spoke to him, and granted him peace and assurance.”
We really want to thank God for His presence and His spirit that has ministered unto His people. Through this extended praise and worship event, we have taken away some precious learn points. But that’s part of growing to be worshippers in Spirit and in truth.

The greatest part is to see everyone serving together with their gifts. It truly serves as an avenue for people to experience unity in the Holy Spirit.

JUMP (Jesus U Must Praise)! 2007 concert is just around the corner. We really believe that God is going to make use of this event to touch many hearts and change lives. So pray with us, sign up, and get ready to experience God’s presence like never before.
See you there!

True worship is never boring...

This week, I have been spending some time meditating and studying Psalm 96 in preparation for our coming WAM night which will be a wonderful night of drawing closer to God through worship.

This psalm is linked to another chapter in the Old Testament... Find out this coming Monday. One thing that strikes me is that we are to come into the presence of God with a "NEW” song! I also have my own favourites. The current ones are "Majesty" and "I'm Forever Yours" by Planetshakers or "What Can I Do" by Paul Baloche. The beauty of approaching our Creator King is that he longs for us to release a unique song from our spirit as we draw closer. Everyone can play a part (this includes the so called "tone challenged").

The song list for our small group or worship service is not meant to be the "be all and end all" of worship time. It is a platform to prepare us to express what God has revealed to us from the Bible, something we may have never mentioned or forgotten about who God is. A new song is simply one where we lift up or glorify God in our own words. It can include singing a song we have never sung before.

It's a good time for us to reflect on our attitude towards our participation in corporate worship, and specifically when it comes to contributing a new song. Have you recently broken into song during or after spending personal time with God? How open are you to singing a new song?

If you are a lead worshipper, consider your audience and appreciate how the songs we sing influence the flow of worship. Does it include or exclude people from participating? Is the song too wordy? How often do you introduce new songs? Is there adequate repetition to help the group/congregation pick up the song. In my experience, try introducing either a new praise or worship song. Sing it during corporate prayer? Play the CD track for an appropriate part of the small group/service before singing it e.g. during the walk in or walk out parts of the service if it's a praise song, introduce it during the Lord's Supper if it's a worship song.

May you rediscover the joy of singing a new song to God.
